You're Invited to a “High” Tea?
The Appeal of High Tea: A Delightful Tradition
When indulging in the finer things in life, few experiences can rival the charm and elegance of high tea. High tea originated in 19th-century England and has since become a beloved tradition that continues to captivate people worldwide. So, what is it that makes high tea so unique? Let us delve into the enchanting details that make this culinary affair remarkable.
A Perfect Blend of Refined Ambiance
The first element that sets high tea apart is its refined ambiance. Picture yourself in a beautifully adorned tea room filled with delicate porcelain, fine linens, and the soft sounds of genteel conversation. The atmosphere is serene and sophisticated, transporting guests to an era of charm and elegance.
A Celebration of Culinary Delights
At the heart of high tea lies a delightful assortment of culinary treats. From delicate finger sandwiches filled with cream cheese, cucumber sandwiches to freshly baked scones served with clotted cream and strawberry jam, every bite invites you on a journey of exotic flavor and texture. The pastries, cakes, and macaroons artfully displayed on tiered stands are a visual feast. Each bite reflects the mastery of the pastry chef, leaving guests craving for more.
An Experience of Unrivaled Sophistication
High tea is far from an ordinary meal; it is an experience of unrivaled sophistication. With its emphasis on etiquette and grace, high tea evokes a sense of refinement rarely found in our fast-paced modern lives. Guests are encouraged to sip their tea from delicate china cups, held just so with an elegant gesture. This attention to detail, combined with the artful arrangement of the table settings, elevates high tea beyond a simple afternoon snack.
A Ritual of Connection and Togetherness
Beyond the culinary indulgence and refined atmosphere, high tea holds a more profound significance. A tea party can become a ritual of connection and togetherness, allowing friends and family to come together and share stories, laughter, and cherished moments. Time slows down during high tea as the focus shifts from the outside world to the company gathered around the table. It is this sense of communal enjoyment that truly makes high tea unique and memorable.
An Invitation to High Tea:
An invitation that indicates the tea will start anywhere between 3 and 5 o'clock will most assuredly be an afternoon low tea, cream tea, or light tea.
Tea that starts at 5:30 or later is a traditional high tea.
Especially nowadays, you will even find tea rooms and Bed and Breakfasts in jolly old England offering 'high afternoon tea' in the middle of the afternoon, so if you are still trying to decide, you can tactfully ask your hostess.
A Traditional High Tea Menu:
Your high tea menu will consist of several courses. Similar to any other more formal sit-down dinners, it can include the following courses:
• Appetizers
• Soup
• Rolls/Bread (Serve different types of tea throughout the meal)
• Salad
• Fish
• Meat
• Vegetables
• Desserts
• And several lovely hot pots of tea!
This meal can be served in a few different ways:
The most formal is 'Served,' by a butler or other wait staff who bring out each course and offer it to each guest.
The next is 'Plated,' which means each plate is prepared in the kitchen and served to the guests. It also usually requires servers, and it is only recommended when guests can choose what they want to eat ahead of time. (i.e., in the invitation)
The other choice is the 'Family' style, where each course is brought out in bowls or on platters and placed on the table. The guests then pass each dish one to another. The family style is the most common way and does not require extra help from the hostess, although asking your best friend, who is in attendance, to assist ahead of time will be of immense value to you.
Also of note is that it is a dinner; therefore, it would be appropriate to serve cocktails before dinner, wine with dinner, and sherry or a dessert wine after.
