Pairing Teas with Your Meal

In the bustling world of culinary pleasures, we often seek harmony and balance in our meals. We meticulously select ingredients and spices, considering their flavors and textures to create the perfect dining experience. While pairing beverages with food has long been a tradition, the practice of pairing teas with meals has gained immense popularity in recent times. There's a diverse range of flavors, aromas, and subtle complexities, and teas have emerged as a delightful companion to breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Here's why:

Breakfast - A Sublime Start to the Day

As the sun rises and the world awakens, the perfect way to start your day is with a cup of tea! Pairing teas with breakfast invigorates the senses and enhances the overall experience. Take, for instance, a hearty plate of scrambled eggs and bacon. Pairing it with a crisp and refreshing green tea such as Sencha or a slightly smoky English Breakfast tea provides a delicious contrast and cleanses the palate.

For those who prefer a sweet start to their day, a warm bowl of oatmeal accompanied by a cup of spiced chai tea delivers an enchanting combination of warmth and comfort. The aromatic spices in the tea intertwine effortlessly with the creamy oats, creating a memorable flavor experience.

Lunch - A Midday Oasis

Midday meals often call for a rejuvenating pause in our busy schedules. Tea, with its myriad of tastes, provides a welcome break from the mundane. When enjoying a light salad or a delicate sandwich, a floral and delicate white tea such as Silver Needle or Jasmine tea adds a touch of elegance and elevates the meal. The tea's aromatic qualities complement the freshness of the ingredients, leaving a lingering sense of satisfaction.

On the other hand, heartier lunch options, like a grilled chicken or a savory curry, pair beautifully with robust black teas like Assam or Darjeeling. These teas possess rich, malty profiles that stand up to the bolder flavors, enhancing the overall experience and leaving a satisfying undertone.

Dinner - A Symphony of Flavors

As day turns into night, dinner becomes an occasion for culinarians to experiment with diverse flavors and indulge in the pleasures of the table. The right tea pairing can elevate the enjoyment to new heights. When savoring a perfectly seared steak or a roasted vegetable medley, a smooth and earthy black tea would be a perfect choice. As connoisseurs of tea, we all have our favorite flavors depending on the time of day or the dish that we want to enjoy a cup of tea. With flavors of the teas ranging from robust to delicate. To start your day, you might try a black tea that's high in caffeine and add just a touch of milk to mellow the flavor. I enjoy English breakfast with my omelets, sausage, or bacon as it enhances the flavor of the dish, and the high dose of caffeine gets me up and going. My grandmother always preferred the taste of green tea with her breakfast, and she would add a touch of milk and honey to make my tea more to my liking.

Keep in mind that it's always a good thing to compliment your dish, so if you're serving apple pie, tea with cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves will accent the flavor of the apples. When serving a dish that is citrus, vanilla, or chocolate-based, my favorite tea is the rich, robust flavor of Earl Grey. Earl Gray, who was the Prime Minister of England from 1830-1834, made this tea the first choice of the populace. The peelings of the Bergamot citrus fruit give Earl Gray its flavor.

If you're looking for a black tea that isn't as strong as some and goes deliciously with scones, biscuits, or cookies, you should try the champagne teas Darjeeling. People appreciate them for their delicate flavor and aroma. When it comes to teas such as raspberry, blueberry, and many other delicious berry teas, the perfect pairing is with dark chocolate, and berry flavor accents the chocolate and vice versa.

When we think about a cheese platter, we usually think about fine wine, but fine teas such as Darjeeling and Green tea pair beautifully with hard cheeses. Green tea has always been one of my favorites (most likely because of my grandmother's influence when I visited her as a child).

Most recently, I discovered Jasmine Green tea and how wonderfully it goes with Chinese food, especially fish. The flavor of the tea enhanced every bite, and it was almost like flowers dissolving in my mouth. I've tried this tea with other dishes, but it has its most awesome effect when paired with Chinese cuisine.

I've also discovered that most black teas pair beautifully with beef, bison, and other red meats. At the same time, lighter teas pair nicely with chicken and other poultry dishes.

In the realm of culinary delights, tea stands as an alluring elixir that transcends boundaries and conventions. Its versatile nature effortlessly entwines with an array of flavors, allowing for a delightful tea pairing experience. From delicate morsels of scones to savory indulgences of cheese platters, the possibilities are endless. Yet, amidst the plethora of choices, it is essential to remember that the true essence lies in simply enjoying your tea. Whether you choose the traditional match of biscuits or scones or venture into uncharted territories with unexpected combinations, the key lies in cherishing every sip and embracing the serenity it brings. So, with a teacup in hand, let go of expectations and relish the pure pleasure of the moment, savoring your tea, no matter what you pair it with.
